We just returned from visiting Glacier National Park, and I’m still trying to find the right words. I’ve seen photos of the place before, gorgeous, professional, breathtaking shots… but nothing could have prepared me for the reality of standing in it. No lens could capture the way it feels when you’re there. You simply have to experience it for yourself.
One of the most unforgettable parts of our trip was the hike to Avalanche Lake. It was a beautiful trail, but not an easy one. There were times on that hike I didn’t think I’d make it. The incline, the uneven path, the effort it took just to keep putting one foot in front of the other It definitely pushed me. Something inside kept urging me forward.
Then we got there.
Surrounded by mountains, we stood before a lake so still and clear it looked like glass. Waterfalls, formed by melting snow, poured down the mountain faces into this beautiful lake. Everything was so quiet, so sacred, I almost didn’t want to speak. The view was… indescribable.
I pulled out my phone to take a picture, of course, and the photo is beautiful. However, it doesn’t give it the full justice it deserves.. It doesn’t show the way the water shimmered. It doesn’t capture the breeze, the smell of pine, the sound of waterfalls in the distance. It doesn’t tell the story of how hard the journey was—or how worth it it turned out to be. My camera tried, but it just couldn’t do it justice.
Isn’t that how it is with God?
There are moments in life when you finally catch a glimpse of His glory, after a long, hard journey, after pushing through doubt or discouragement, and your soul just stands in awe. You wish you could explain it. You wish others could see what you’re seeing, but some things God does in your heart are just too deep to be shared in a snapshot.
It reminds me of 1 Corinthians 2:9: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.”
The beauty of God’s creation is just a reflection, a shadow, of the even greater beauty of His presence, His love, and His plan for us. Just like Avalanche Lake, you can’t fully understand it until you’ve walked through the journey and arrived in that sacred place.
Psalm 19:1 says: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”
I saw that firsthand in Glacier. Creation doesn’t whisper… it shouts the glory of God. The mountains, the waterfalls, the still waters, they all proclaim what words can’t. They testify to the majesty of a God who paints with stars and carves with wind and water.
So here’s what I’m taking with me:
Not every moment can be captured. Not every part of the journey will be easy. However, when you press through, when you make it to that place where you can stand still and see the wonder of what God has done, you’ll know it was worth it!
Let the beauty around you remind you of the beauty within you. Let the creation lift your eyes to the Creator. If what we’ve seen here on earth is this breathtaking, wow… just imagine what heaven must be like!
