What do you think of when you hear the word, “revival”? Do you think of lyrics to a worship song, a series of services at church, or an experience at a summer camp when you were younger?
When I started writing this blog, I asked a few friends what they think of when they hear someone say “revival,” and here are their answers.
“Repentance. An acknowledgement that His will should be what we are seeking.”
“It reminds me of a gathering together of people who are ready to truly make a difference in the Kingdom and not just talk about it. People who are ready to put action where their words are and faith where doubt has been.”
“Hearts being awakened. A reviving of something that was dead or barely breathing. It’s not an event, but a move of God that happens within us!”
“A move of God that happens within us!” While all of their answers are true, this response resonated with me. “A move of God that happens within us!” A move of God that isn’t confined to the hours of a service or a church building, but truly changes every aspect of our lives. This is the revival that I am praying that we see in each of our lives and our community.
During our mission trip to Maine, Pastor Jason shared the story of Evan Roberts and the Welsh Revival. For years before the revival began, Evan would pray, “Lord, bend me.” He spent hours studying God’s Word and praying that God would “bend him” to follow God more closely. He didn’t pray for God to do things his way, but for God to change his desires to match God’s. What would happen if that became our daily prayer?
This summer, I have seen what has happened in the lives of different people when they truly sell out to letting God bend them into His image. It looks like teenagers that are excited to read God’s Word and share what He is speaking to them. It looks like children that press into an altar time and truly expect God to hear and answer their prayers. It looks like an entire mission team that is united as one to help reach the unreached in a city that is far from their home. These are the beginning stirrings of revival…but it can’t stop there!
A true revival in our hearts will change us from the inside out! Our lives will never look the same! It will change each and every aspect of our lives when we start to sincerely pray, “Lord, bend me!” Will it be a painless process? No, but anything worthwhile is worth the pain! Will it be quick? No, Evan Roberts prayed for years before the Welsh Revival began, but we know that God heard each of those prayers.
So, here’s the question for you. Is revival worth it? How much do you actually desire, “a move of God that happens with us”? Are you willing to count the cost and boldly pray, “Lord, bend me”?
