What are we waiting for?

By:Gabi Pope

This past weekend at the women’s conference, I heard a quote that hasn’t stopped stirring in my heart:

“The Gospel is only good if it gets there in time.”
– Carl Henry

Those words cut deep. They made me stop and think about how many people in my life still don’t know Jesus!! I started picturing their faces, their names. These are people that I love so deeply, who don’t know the Lord.

I know the Gospel is good. I know it’s life-changing. I know it’s the greatest hope in a broken world. But if I stay silent, if I let fear or distraction or my comfort to win, what good is it to the person who never gets the chance to hear it? It’s like holding the cure to a deadly disease but never offering it to the sick. The Good News is only “good” if it actually reaches them before it’s too late.

When I think about eternity, my excuses suddenly feel so, so small. My schedule, my comfort, my worries about what people might think, none of that will matter when souls are standing before Jesus. What will matter is whether or not they ever heard the Good News, and whether I was faithful in opening my mouth.

But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” Romans 10:14

Someone preaching to them. Someone speaking kindness and love to them. Someone carrying the Gospel. And that “someone” isn’t always the pastor. It’s not just the missionary. It’s me. It’s you, friend!! I don’t want to stand before Jesus one day and realize that I stayed silent when He COMMANDED me to speak. I held onto the hope of salvation but was too afraid to pass it on.

What are we waiting for???

The woman at the well ran back to her village after only ONE encounter with Jesus. She ran back and told them all to come and see the Man that she had seen and talked to, the Man who knew it all, the Messiah! I want to be bold, just like her! She didn’t have all the big, most thought out words. She had something far greater, she had her testimony and she knew that she had to tell everyone about this Man!!!

I had to ask myself, how many times have I assumed I’d have more time? Maybe I’ll bring up Jesus later in conversation. Maybe someone else will share with them, I am not good enough, I don’t know enough. Sometimes, I even assume they already know about Jesus, because we live in the Bible belt and who could live here and NOT have heard His name. But the truth is, the world is corrupt and the enemy wants nothing more than to drown out the Hope that so many people are looking for!!

None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Eternity is closer than we could ever imagine. If the Gospel is going to be good for the people in this world, it has to get there now.

I’m praying for courage, for you and me. I’m praying for eyes to see every moment as an opportunity. I’m praying for a heart so broken for the lost that silence is no longer an option!!! I am praying that each of us live with a sense of urgency, just like the woman at the well, to tell everyone to come and see this Man that has changed our entire lives. I am praying that each of us have a heart that burns for the lost, and eyes to see people the way Christ sees them, as His children.

The Gospel is only good if it gets there in time. And for the people that I love, that I encounter in the store, I don’t want it to be too late.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28: 19-20
