Created in His Image

By: Amanda Allums

God has created us in His image (Genesis 1:27). Have you ever thought about if that meant just on the outside or did He make us on the inside too? God created us with a spiritual nature and character. That spirituality can be either nurtured biblically or twisted by humanity, but we will worship something because we were created to worship. I have chosen to worship Jesus Christ. As I worship Him by reading the Bible, going to church and being fed spiritually, singing praises to Him, praying, and having a thankful heart, God is building my character to fit the image He created me in.

God has made us in His image but the things of this world are constantly trying to change us and shape us into something else. The devil roams around looking for people to devour (1 Peter 5:8) and he uses things in this world to turn us against the things of God and pervert anything good in this world that God has given us for our development and enjoyment. Despite what some people may think, God does want us to enjoy life and He has good things planned for us. That doesn’t mean things will always be perfect and we may not always be happy because we live in a fallen world. But we can still have joy and peace despite bad things that happen to us or around us. We may get sad, angry, or confused at times, but there is absolutely nothing in this world that can rob you of your joy or peace because those things are not found in our circumstances. They are found in the presence of God (Psalm 16:11). They are also fruits of the Spirit. So, what this tells me is that God has made us with those things in mind, but because we are born into a fallen world, we need the presence of God in order to live a life of peace and we need the presence of God to have joy despite our circumstances. We can’t flourish without Him!

When I picture the image of God, I picture perfect peace and completeness. God lacks nothing. He is everything we need and He has everything we need. If we are made in His image then we are made complete. If we have Jesus then we have everything we need. We were all made in His image and as long as we have breath in our lungs there is always hope for a future. There is always hope for change. I have seen God make a way where there seemed to be no way. So I encourage you to keep your eyes on Jesus and don’t allow the devil and this world to change you. Ask God’s presence to go before you and surround you, keep your eyes and heart open to be able to see things through spiritual eyes and allow God to shape you into His image.
