Be Thou My Vision

I’ll never forget seeing her walk out onto the stage at The Crush. I was 15 years old and had begged to leave Florida one day early, so that I wouldn’t miss the concert. Along with the rest of the crowd of teens and 20-somethings, I watched her being escorted to the piano. She sat down and played the beginning chords of what would become one of my favorite hymns……

“Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart”

Many years later, I still love to hear Ginny Owens sing this song. As a teenager, I understood why she was asking God to be her vision…..she was blind! That’s an easy thing to grasp, especially for someone whose vision is as horrid as mine! But as a teenager, I really didn’t get the full meaning of the song…….now it speaks volumes!

My dad’s letterhead had Proverbs 29:18 along the bottom. “Without a vision, the people perish.” He knew at a young age that he wouldn’t live to walk me down the aisle or to see his grandchildren, but he had a vision. He knew that sharing his experiences and faith would make a difference, no matter how many days he was given. He had a vision!
“Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart”

I have always loved reading the story of Esther, and I love how you can see God working behind the scenes through the entire story.  The story doesn’t tell us why Queen Vashti refused to go to King Xerxes…..maybe she was tired, maybe she couldn’t stand dealing with someone that was drunk, maybe she was genuinely difficult to deal with…..but for whatever reason, she refuses to answer his call and is removed from her position.

God just so happened to have a beautiful young girl lined up to win the king’s attention….and she just so happened to save His people from Haman’s evil plot. Right? Not hardly! We can all acknowledge that God’s hand was clearly at work behind the scenes, but could Esther see it at the time? As she was sent to a harem with hundreds of other girls she didn’t know. As she went before the king praying that he wouldn’t have her put to death for invading his presence without being called.

If Esther had seen herself through God's eyes, she would have seen that she had been placed in that exact spot “for such a time as this.” She wasn’t made to settle for her life in Susa, whatever that may have looked like. She was made for more! God put her in the exact place she needed to be to rescue the Jewish people from Haman’s plan.

I can’t say how everything in all of our lives will be woven together for good, but I trust that they will be. Romans 8:28 holds this promise, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Today, I am praying for each of us. I’m praying that we will have God’s vision to see our circumstances through His eyes…that we will look for His hand every day…and that we will find Him to be the true treasure of our lives!

“Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art”
