Don't Miss the Moment

By: Blake Allums

Text: John 12:37 & 42-43

I do not want to ever miss a moment where the Lord can do something tremendous in my life. Before we begin, let's glance at the context of this passage. Jesus has just raised a man named Lazarus from the dead and people are talking and actually getting saved as a result of this miracle. Then Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt while everyone cried “Hosanna, Hosanna!” Finally, people have turned on Jesus and now want him crucified. What a roller coaster of a story. But, I feel as if we find ourselves on this roller coaster today. We see the miracles of the Lord taking place and we see church growth but at the same time we see murder in our community, we see false religions moving closer, and scandals breaking out in the church world. Tensions are high in our communities.

Here is the beauty in all of this though, we can use these moments to bring someone to the feet of Jesus. Here is the hard part, we often miss these moments while being consumed with something else.

  1. You can experience God and still not believe (v.37)
This text reminds me of Pharaoh in Exodus 7 where he had a hardened heart even though God was doing all of these miracles and working through Moses. It was his PRIDE that got in the way of the moment.

John 3:16 says it perfectly, “believe”. Experience is one thing but belief is another. You can experience God all you want but if you never believe then you have no eternal life.
It does not stop there…

  1. You can believe and still disobey. (v.42)
You can experience God and you can believe in God but if you do not obey him then it is dead. The Pharisees in this story did not CONFESS him. Romans 10:9 proves that confession is a part of our salvation. Matthew 10:33 shows that if we deny Jesus in front of others he will deny us in front of his father. This makes me reflect over my own life to see if I have ever denied Jesus in front of others… and I HAVE. This is something that ate at me in high school and still haunts me to this day. How much more could I have done for the kingdom if I had cared more about it than my own reputation?

Fear is the reason these men did not confess in our passage. Matthew 10:28 warns about this though, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
A faith that fears people more than God is always going to struggle. They were afraid of ruining their reputation. When you care more about protecting your worldly reputation you begin to delay your Godly obedience. Obedience to God is far more important than any title, position, job, financial security, etc.

  1. What glory are you after? (v.43)
The glory from man comes from fame, riches, good job, relationships, etc.
The glory from God is eternal life, heaven, being in his literal presence, the opportunity to worship, casting our crowns at his feet, etc.  I am after the glory that comes from God more than anything. I will throw away anything temporary if it means that I get to dwell in his presence forever.

I pray that you would do the same.
