2 Timothy 4:1-5
This is one of my favorite passages of scripture in the entire Bible. Why? Because it is a commissioning from Paul to Timothy to do the things that are written. It is important to note that this is the last letter, or recorded words, of the apostle Paul and he is in a Roman prison “bound by chains like a criminal” (2 Tim. 2:9). What does he choose to do with it? Encourage a young person named Timothy.
The first place I want to settle is in verse 1 where Paul writes, “I charge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus…”. This is interesting because Paul’s setting of writing this is a Roman prison bound by chains. So, how could he be in the presence of God and Christ Jesus in the middle of a bad situation? Because that’s how good our God is. He meets us in the middle of our mess and redeems us through His Son. It doesn’t matter where you are in your life, you are still in the presence of God and Christ Jesus.
In verse 2 we see a commissioning to Timothy to “preach the word, be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”
Verses 3-4 introduce the distortion of scripture and unsound doctrine/preaching. In this letter, Paul warns against unsound teaching of the word of God 17 times. A time is coming where unsound teaching will take over the church. I believe that we are slowly walking into this abomination. Not only the preacher but the listener will have itching ears. They will want sermons that are story-based and not word-based. They will look for someone who does not preach conviction and repentance. They will look for someone who says they can habitually sin and still be in Christ. BUT, it is our job as true believers to never distort the word. It is our job as true believers to never conform to the passions of the world but rather transform our minds. Why is this all important? Because a watered-down gospel cannot produce devoted disciples.
Verse 5 encourages us though. It says what we are to do when this time comes and what to do right now.

- Preach the Word: this is a constant theme throughout this letter. References to the word of God appear 36 times. It is a major theme. Why? Because the word of God changes lives.
- Be ready in season and out of season: when should you be ready to preach the word? In season and out of season. Always.
- Reprove, rebuke, exhort: this is to convince, disapprove, and encourage people through the preaching of the word of God.
- With patience and teaching: this is how you preach the word.

- Be sober-minded: this is language that is often used when dealing with substance abuse. That is because it distorts your mind. It causes you to be out of control. To be sober-minded is to be self-controlled.
- Endure suffering: James 5:13 tells us that if we are suffering, PRAY! The answer to endure suffering is prayer.
- Do the work of an evangelist: this is the act of sharing the life changing message of the gospel. It is to put action to the words you confess.
- Fulfill your ministry: this is when we carry out what we have been called to do. Ultimately, Matthew 28:19.
Let this serve as encouragement for you. I would love to leave you with this charge:
- “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. But as for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” - 2 Timothy 4:1-5
