Over the last year, Revival Kids has begun to host Family Discipleship Nights each quarter. At these services, we’ve invited families to come experience a Revival Kids service together. So, of course, we play competitive games, get out energy during fast worship, memorize our power verse, and then move into slow worship. It’s always fun to watch parents and students engage in the service together and then to jump into slow worship as a family. There’s nothing like watching an entire family lift their hands to worship together!
Our next Family Discipleship Night is this week, and we are talking about the importance of passing our faith on to the next generation. Billy Graham is famously quoted as saying, “the church is always only one generation away from extinction.” Can you imagine a world without the Gospel? What about an entire generation that doesn’t know what God has done in each of our lives?
Let’s read what I think is one of the saddest verses in the Bible, “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10)
Just think…one generation of Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and saw miracle after miracle! The next crossed the Jordan and saw the walls of Jericho fall! And then, we read Judges 2:10! Joshua’s generation died, and the next knew nothing about all of the miracles that God had done!
We might wonder how that could happen, but it’s pretty simple. One generation chose not to pass along their faith to the next. It probably wasn’t a conscious choice that they made. It most likely happened as a slow fade. They started with good intentions to share the miracles with their family, but then life got busy…or other things seemed more important…or small idols of the world started to draw their attention…or something bad happened, and they were convinced faith was no longer important…or the desire to fit in with their new surroundings took priority over following God’s law.
But if we look back to the book of Deuteronomy, we see how God gave the Israelites instructions on how to keep this from happening.
“These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts. And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
God gave the Israelites these instructions to help them pass along His laws and faithfulness to their children. Teach His laws at home; talk about His Word as you walk, lie down, and get back up; write them on your doorposts. In other words, keep God’s Word present in your life and family. God didn’t make it difficult or tiresome. He literally told the people to teach their children the ways, laws, and faithfulness of God and to keep God at the forefront of their lives.
This is the challenge for every family that wants to raise kids who know and love Jesus. Faith cannot be something that we only talk about on Sunday mornings. It has to become part of our everyday lives. We have to talk about what God is doing, remind our children of what He has done, and make His Word a regular part of our homes. Our kids need to know that the God they read about in the Bible is still working in our lives today!
And maybe that’s where we start—by telling our own stories. Tell your kids about the prayers God answered. Tell them about the times He provided when you didn’t know how things were going to work out. Tell them about the seasons when God was faithful even when life was hard. Our children need to hear and learn all the stories of the Bible, but they also need to hear about the God of the Bible working in the lives of the people they know and trust the most.
We can’t make the decision for our child to build a relationship with God for them, but we can make sure they have every opportunity to see what a real relationship with Him looks like! We can intentionally talk about His Word, worship together, pray together, and share His faithfulness with our families. We don’t have to do it perfectly, but we do have to be intentional. Because one day, the faith that we are living out in front of our children today could become the faith that they carry into the next generation!
