Flowers grow in the Valleys

Recently I heard a song that I instantly loved. A part went like this, “So I wrote it up in a desperate prayer, ‘Lord why are you keeping me here?’” I began thinking about the different Bible stories where they too were praying desperate prayers.

Job was a faithful, Godly man, and the devil wanted him so badly. So God allowed the devil to take everything from him, only sparing his life. I want to imagine that Job was hitting his knees desperately asking God, “Why? Why do you have me here?”

Elijah was a mighty prophet for God. But even Elijah stormed to the desert and asked God to end his life. That to me sounds like a desperate prayer.

Hannah desperately prayed for a son!

The thief on the cross next to Jesus–he was desperate, he had no idea what was next for him. So out of desperation he turned to Jesus and said, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He did not expect Jesus to tell him he would be in paradise with Him!

There are so many other stories where people desperately prayed to God. But friend, without those desperate prayers, Job wouldn’t have been blessed ten times more than he was before. If Elijah had died he never would have seen the miraculous power of the fire from Heaven- in which all of those that were worshiping Baal turned and bowed to God! If Hannah had never prayed for a son, we would not have had Samuel–who proclaimed God's word to the Israelites and is written as the greatest prophet in Israel’s history!

I feel like we have all been at the feet of Jesus with a desperate prayer. I feel like we have all asked, “Why am I here?” Friend, you are here because you are planting seeds for the years to come! You are here sowing a small part into the Kingdom of Heaven. Nothing you do for God's glory goes unseen by Him. You could be sliding down a water slide with a young kid, greeting a new family as they enter the church for the first time, giving someone a ride on a golf cart, or simply being a smiling face; you are planting a seed.

So next time you begin to ask yourself, “Why am I even here?” I pray that you remember, God put you here in this moment “for such a time as this” and friend, you’re planting a seed that God is going to water and grow!

And always remember, flowers grow in the deepest valleys.
