“We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:12-18 ESV
We pray to know the will of God in our lives. At times, it feels like a challenge to truly understand what God’s will is for our lives. I believe the place we struggle the most is that we believe God’s will for our lives is a position or title or a particular job to do. However, the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonians, gives some insight and a powerful guide on aligning with God's will. Paul offers practical steps that not only enhance our spiritual walk but also helps us to have better relationships with each other.
A Call to Respect and Love
Paul begins by urging the Thessalonians to respect those who work hard among them, particularly those who are in leadership positions within the church. This respect is not merely about acknowledging authority but is deeply rooted in love and appreciation for their labor in the Lord. By fostering a culture of respect and love, believers can create an environment where the will of God is more readily discerned and followed.
Living in Peace
The call to live in peace with one another is a recurring theme in Paul's letters. In this passage, it is highlighted as a crucial aspect of God's will. Peace among believers not only reflects the character of God but also serves as a testimony to the world. It is through peace that the church can effectively function as the body of Christ, working together towards common spiritual goals.
Rejoice, Pray, and Give Thanks
Paul's exhortation to "rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances" encapsulates a lifestyle that is in tune with God's will. Rejoicing always does not mean ignoring life's challenges, but finding joy in the presence and promises of God. Continual prayer keeps believers connected to God, allowing His will to be revealed and understood in daily life. Gratitude, even in difficult times, shifts focus from temporary troubles to eternal blessings.
The Spirit's Role
Finally, Paul warns against quenching the Spirit and despising prophecies. The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in guiding believers into the will of God. By being open to the Spirit's leading and the prophetic words that align with Scripture, believers can discern God's will more clearly. Testing everything and holding onto what is good ensures that we will remain grounded in truth.
When we follow what the will is for our lives, God guides us to the places where our purpose can be seen. God’s will is less about a particular thing we do and more about living a life that is pleasing to God, and doing what brings glory and honor to Him.
