Our Identity in Christ

By: Kara Wallis

Right now I am a part of a small group that is diving into what it means to not look back or stay stuck in our past. It has been very tough to reflect on these areas of my life where I have been stuck, but so necessary to move forward in God’s purpose and promises that He has for my life. One of the ways we get help getting unstuck is knowing who we are in Christ and our identity in Him according to the Word of God. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God”‭‭ (Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬). ‭
This gives us security, belonging, significance, stability, and helps us be grounded. God has adopted us into His family, therefore we have rights, privileges, and blessings He wants us to walk into. If we put our identity in anything but Christ we will wind up empty and stuck.

In Romans 8:14-17 it says,

”For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

We are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ! Adoption is at the heart of the gospel and God could have used any metaphor to explain how He saved us and how we became a part of His family. He uses this intimate metaphor of adoption to show He chose us to be His sons and daughters! God welcomes anyone and everyone into His family and I know I am thankful for that! Because of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection we have all been invited into God’s family. Being God’s adopted children we have a blessing, name, relationship, and a future and He wants us to experience His intimacy and privileges that come with being His child. Maybe from different things we have gone through in life we have a distorted view of who God is as our Father. Maybe we see him as a cold, distant, angry, tyrannical Father but this could not be further from the truth of who He really is. God is a loving, kind, gracious, and compassionate Father and His love for us is perfect and complete. He knows everything about us, even those deep, dark places that no one else knows, and He chooses to love us anyway. “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” ‭‭(1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬).

If you are struggling with who you are in Christ, remember that we are fully seen, known, and loved. God loves us perfectly, wholly, and completely. Stand on this promise from Romans 8:37-39 that says, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
