Contagious Joy

By: Gabi Pope

There’s something magnetic about a joyful person. Not the kind of joy that vanishes with hardship, but the kind that holds steady, even through tears. The Bible speaks of that kind of joy often. Not just as an emotion, but as a spiritual force.

I often ask myself, “where does contagious joy even come from?” Not from circumstances. Not from things going right. Contagious joy flows only from the presence of God. Contagious joy stands out because it doesn’t make sense by this world’s standards. This joy shows up in the hospital room of the families that are hurting. This joy shows up in the hard times of waiting. This joy shows up in the suffering. Contagious joy doesn’t just help us through the super hard times, it transforms those hard times into something else all together.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10

This isn’t a suggestion, friend, it’s a declaration. GOD’S JOY HAS POWER! It strengthens us and others around us.

Contagious joy comes when we stay close to the One who is joy. It’s supernatural. It transcends hard days and disappointing news. It’s rooted in the unchanging love and victory of Jesus. When the world is bitter and divided, joy shines like a lighthouse.

I’m often reminded of the story in Acts 16. Paul and Silas sang in prison. What was their crime? They casted a demon out of a slave girl and “disrupted” the locals. They were beaten, their feet were put in shackles and they were locked in the cell. Then in Acts 16:25 we heard “about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Can you even imagine that? They didn’t wait for freedom to celebrate. They sang their way through chains, and their joy opened prison doors literally and spiritually. Their contagious joy led people to salvation!!!

Your joy can set someone else free, just like in that prison. Joy isn’t meant to be hoarded. When you’ve tasted God’s goodness, you want others to taste it too. Joy is a fruit, but it’s also a seed, it multiplies when you give it away. In Revival Kids, we love a good challenge. So I would like to challenge each one of us with something!

This world is filled with so much negativity, anxiety, depression, you name it, but YOUR contagious joy might just be the song someone else needs to hear. When the world sees us rejoicing in a season where we should be mourning, it begins to ask “why”? What’s so different with them? What if in that moment, you get to experience a moment just as Paul and Silas did. What if in that moment YOU get to tell the world about The One that true contagious joy comes from!!

Let your joy be your testimony, friend!
