Spiritual Vigilance

By: Kara Wallis

Zephaniah 1:12
“At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.”

Lately, I have been fervently praying against being complacent or too comfortable with where I am at spiritually. I had made a note of this verse in Zephaniah on my phone and recently found it scrolling through there actually looking for something else. If I’m being honest, the book of Zephaniah isn’t a book of the Bible that I think about very often, but there is so much wisdom in this very short book. This verse is a warning against being spiritually stagnant or complacent.

The spiritual symbolism in this verse is remarkable and made me really go deeper in God’s Word. This verse is a prophetic warning from God to Jerusalem. It says that God will search with lamps and this signifies a total and unsparing search to uncover hidden sin in our lives. The next part of the verse talks about wine dregs, and I had to do some research on what wine dregs actually were. Dregs are the solid particles that come out of the wine during fermentation. It contains dead yeast cells, grape skins and other pulp, and if the wine is left too long it can spoil. Wine dregs symbolizes being stagnant in spirit or complacent.

When we become complacent we can become apathetic toward the Spirit of God. We can be deceived by the thoughts of God being indifferent towards us or even think that He is inactive in our lives so therefore His judgements or rewards will not come. These are lies from a very real enemy that is actively trying to destroy us and our lives. This verse calls us as believers to guard against being spiritually complacent and remain vigilant in our walk with Jesus and to make sure we keep ourselves in His presence.

Proverbs 4:23, which states: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it". We need to operate in passion and fervor for the Lord and always be seeking after the holiness of God and to be more like Him. We also need to have a proper fear of God’s judgment and grace. We serve a mighty God that is always actively working for the good of those that love him.

Romans 8:28, which states, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose". I hope and pray that this verse challenges you like it has me to truly examine ourselves and helps us to be more spiritually alert and fight against complacency in our walks with Christ.
