Day 1

Faith Fact
The Holy Spirit helps me to be more like Jesus.

Faith Verse
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23

Question of the Day: What are the fruits of the Spirit?

LISTEN to God through His Word:

Paul teaches us that as we grow closer to God, the Holy Spirit produces each of these fruits in our lives. What do you think that means? (Give the kids time to share what they think it means to them.) Would you expect to pick blueberries from an apple tree? What about pineapples from a banana tree? Of course not. A tree can only produce it’s same kind of fruit.

Let’s read Matthew 7:16-20. How did this verse say that we can identify people? (By their actions.) Our actions should look like Jesus’s actions! But thankfully, God sends the Holy Spirit to help our actions and attitudes start to reflect Jesus!

Before we really get started, let’s take a little test. This card lists all of the fruit of the Spirit. We are going to look at our list to see how we feel that our lives are showing the fruit of the Spirit today. (As a family, help your kids choose an answer for each. Remind them that none of us are going to be perfect, so we should be honest with our answers.)

LEARN from God’s Word:

Question 1: How can people identify us by our actions as followers of Jesus?

Question 2: What fruit of the Spirit do you need the Holy Spirit to help you with most?

PRAY about It:
Dear Jesus, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to help us become more like You. Help people to see You in my words and actions. Amen.

Day 2

Faith Fact
The Holy Spirit helps me to be more like Jesus.

Faith Verse
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23

Question of the Day: How does the Holy Spirit help us become more like Jesus?

LISTEN to God through His Word:

Let’s think about trees for a minute. What do they need to be able to grow into healthy trees that have lots of fruit? (Water, Soil, Light) Can Jesus be those things in our lives?

Read:

John 7:37-38 - What does Jesus say will flow from our hearts? (Rivers of living water)

Colossians 2:7 - What are our roots? (Our lives/foundation in Jesus)
How can we grow roots into Jesus? (Spend time with Him by praying, worshiping, and reading our Bible)

John 8:12 - What does this verse say that the light of Jesus will lead us to? (life)

When we spend time with Jesus, our lives grow and change, just as if we were plants with proper water, roots, and sunshine. Then, like a tree, we will grow good fruit. And the good fruit that grows in our lives as a result of being with Christ is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

John 15:5 reminds us that the only way to grow good fruit in our lives is to live deeply connected with Jesus, every day. When we live like this, God’s character starts to shine through us, because God’s Spirit produces His actions and attitude in us! We can’t force a fruit tree to grow apples or a vine to grow a bunch of grapes, but we can give it good soil, water, and access to sunlight. In the same way, we can’t make ourselves grow in the joy of the Lord or the peace of God. But when we draw near to Christ, the Holy Spirit produces those things in our lives!

LEARN from God’s Word:

Question 1. How can we grow deep roots in Jesus?
(By spending time reading the Bible, praying, worshipping and going to church.)

Question 2: How can we produce good fruit for Jesus?
(By staying connected to Jesus)

Pray about It:
God, I ask that You would send more people to tell others about You, both close to where I am and around the world. May I be faithful to pray for more workers for the harvest field and for many people to come to know Jesus. Amen.

Day 3

Faith Fact
The Holy Spirit helps me to be more like Jesus.

Faith Verse
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23

Question of the Day:  What is REAL love?

LISTEN to God through His Word

During Discipleship Sunday for the next few months, we are going to focus on a couple of the fruit of the Spirit. This month, we are starting with love.

What do you think of when you think about love? You might think of Valentine’s Day or your parents or your best friend.

Who are some people that you love? What are some things that you love? Do you love pizza the same way that you love your parents? Hopefully not.

Well, the Bible uses different Hebrew and Greek words to describe love. The word that is used for love in Galatians 5:22 is “agape.” Agape love is like God’s love for us. It is unconditional. That means that God loves us no matter what! God doesn’t love you because of what you do, or don’t do. He doesn’t love you because you are good at sports or because you are smart. He doesn’t love you because you were kind. He loves you because you are His child! He loves you no.matter.what!

That’s the kind of love that we want the Holy Spirit to grow in our hearts! This kind of love that loves people no matter what, that puts other people first, and reflects Jesus to them!

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

What are some words that Paul used to describe love? (patient, kind, not jealous, etc.) Do you think that we can love people like this on our own? Definitely not!! That’s why we need the Holy Spirit’s help with the fruit of the Spirit. In John 13:35, Jesus tells the disciples, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” The love that we show to everyone should show people that we are following Jesus.

Is there anyone in your life that is hard to love? When you think of them this week, ask Jesus to help you to love them the way that He does. His love is kind, patient, and forgiving!

As you spend time with God this week, ask Him to grow His love in your heart!

LEARN from God’s Word:

Question 1. What is the Hebrew word for love in Galatians 5:22?
(Agape.)

Question 2: What is "agape" love?
(Unconditional love.)

Question 3: How can we show God's unconditional love to the people around us?

PRAY about It:
Dear Jesus, thank You for loving us unconditionally. Help us to show those around us the same love that You show us. Amen.
